Ingredients

This is a complete list of all the ingredients we use in our products. You will see different ingredients listed in our soaps because we do not make them ourselves. Full ingredients disclosed for every product under the ingredients tab.

Calendula flower extract

calendula officinalis

We grow Calendula Officinalis (otherwise known as Pot Marigold) at our farm on the Mendip Hills. Calendula has been used for thousands of years in skin care to soothe inflammation and promote healing. It is less well known for internal use as a remedy for digestive and urinary infections, as a mouthwash or gargle for sore throats, tonsillitis and gum disease. It's uses are, in fact, far too many to mention.

We love it's well known calming qualities, but also because it can promote collagen regeneration and is rich in antioxidants, making it possibly the oldest anti ageing treatment in the world.

We grow, pick and dry the flowers and use them to infuse our base oils.

Some of the useful components of calendula include, carotenoids, flavonoids, mucilage, resin, polysachharides, aromatic plant acids as well as saponins, glycosides and sterols

It's unusual to find clinical studies of natural remedies, but Calendula's healing properties have been recognised in several studies, including this one:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25276736

Here is a lovely link on the traditional and folk uses of Calendula which quotes well known herbalist Mathew Woods

It is traditionally used for calming and soothing the skin and mucus membranes reduces skin irritation and has ant-inflammatory properties. We love it for it's ability to soften, hydrate and repair. It's effect on rough hands, feet and skin damaged by water is remarkable. It's a great herb for very dry skin conditions as it will help hydrate the driest skin.

Zinc oxide

CI77947

Zinc oxide is a naturally occurring mineral which has been used for many years in all sorts of first aid situations. It is the active ingredient in calamine lotion because it soothes and cools angry skin. It is also found in hemorrhoid preparations because it shrinks swollen tissue. It is used in many mineral sunscreens and as a white pigment in mineral make up.

We only use non-nano zinc oxide, so it won't be absorbed into the skin. It will show white on the skin if applied too liberally. It is very water repellent and will protect skin from moisture damage. consequently it is hard to wash out and it can stain clothes and nappies.

Zinc oxide has a drying effect on the skin and is useful for oily skin and suitable for skin affected by blistery rashes (like chicken pox). It is very suitable for skin prone to rosacea, acne and perioral dermatitis.
