" I always use organic toiletries as my skin reacts to a lot of chemicals found in normal products. I have been using this product for a few days(oil cleansing method) and there has been a noticeable difference in the feel and look of my skin. My skin is soft and smooth no greasy or dry patches. I will be trying some of the other products in the Lyonsleaf range in the new year. Tha ... "

Cosmetic Ingredients

At lyonsleaf we only use a select number of natural ingredients. If you are not sure about the term 'natural' or prefer organic products have a look at our page organic vs natural or see the list below and judge for yourself.

Calendula: calendula officinalis

We grow Calendula Officinalis (otherwise known as Pot Marigold) at our farm on the Mendip Hills. Calendula is one of the most ancient healing herbs and has been renown for it's remarkable qualities for thousands of years. Because it heals, rejuvenates, has anti-inflammatory qualities and an antimicrobial effect, it is used for cuts and abrasions, nappy rash and chapped lips, any sort of inflamed skin and as a general healing and rejuvenating preparation. It is less well known for internal use as a remedy for digestive and urinary infections, as a mouthwash or gargle for sore throats, tonsillitis and gum disease. It's uses are, in fact, far too many to mention.

We love it's well known healing qualities and it's remarkable success in treating eczema and psoriasis but also because it promotes collagen regeneration and is rich in antioxidants making it possibly the oldest anti ageing treatment in the world.

We grow, pick and dry the flowers and use them to infuse our base oils, which we then use to make our Calendula rich oil based products. We also use the dried petals in our Aromatherapy Bath Bags.

The useful components of calendula include, carotenoids, flavonoids, mucilage, resin, polysachharides, aromatic plant acids as well as saponins, glycosides and sterols.

Shea Butter - fair trade, organic, unrefined: butyrospermum parkii

Shea butter is a wonderful moisturiser. It has softening properties, which are immediately apparent. It helps the skin retain moisture with regular use and is widely used to treat Eczema. It is, remarkably, completely non comedogenic, which means it will not block pores.

It is a natural sunscreen and provides protection from airborne toxins which is why it is noted for it's anti-ageing properties.

The Butter comes from the fruits of the Karite Nut tree. The pits are first removed from the fruit, boiled, sun-dried and finally roasted. When the pits have been completely dehydrated, they are hand-crushed. This is laborious work which is why we were particularly keen to use fair trade Shea Butter so we chose a co-operative in Ghana recommended by the Fair Trade foundation - The Akoma Foundation. We only use unrefined Shea Butter as the refining process involves harsh solvents.

Almond Oil has excellent emollient qualities, which soften and soothe skin, it is less greasy than many oils and easily absorbed by your skin and is of great benefit to the skin's natural lipid barrier. It does not block pores. Almond Oil contains kaempferol - a powerful antioxidant, and quercetin - a flavenoid used to treat eczema. It is a rich source of minerals such as manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium. Almond oil is said to reduce scar tissue that is associated with the after effects of acne and stretch marks. We use only cold pressed Almond Oil as it retains all of it's theaputic value. Other extraction processes use solvents to extract more oil from the nut which destroy nutrients and can contaminate the resulting oil.

Vitamins A & C are good for mature dry or sensitive skin. The apricot kernel oil helps skin retain elasticity, clarity, and suppleness.

Apricot Kernel Oil is particularly easily absorbed and non-comedogenic. (does not block pores)

Avocado Oil: persea gratissima

Avocado oil is easily absorbed into deep tissue, and has wonderful emollient properties. It is rich in vitamins A, B1, B2 and D, lecithin, potassium as well as vitamin E. Avocado oil contains the following fatty acid: palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleum, linolenic

In a study done at the Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1991, it was found that avocado oil significantly increases the amount of collagen in the skin - which normally is under attack as we grow older.

We don't choose organic in this case because, we understand, avocado crops are not subject to excessive chemical spraying. We do Choose Cold Pressed to avoid solvents used in the extracting process (known as refining).

Organic Sunflower Seed Oil: helianthus annuus

Sunflower Oil contains linoleic acid, oleic acid, lecithin, carotenoids and has a high Vitamin E content. Very high in antioxidants, particularly the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, which help prevent free damage to skin, which can contribute to premature ageing. Research shows Sunflower oil is mostly absorbed but also provides a very light protective barrier that helps resist skin infections, and keeping away bacteria helping to maintain more youthful skin, It is also, however, non-comedogenic (it will not block pores). We only use sunflower high in oleic acid which means it is very sun-stable and will not oxidise easily on your skin or in the bottle.

We choose only Organic Sunflower Seed Oil because the seeds from which the oil is pressed are directly exposed to any chemical spraying applied to the crops. We use only cold pressed Organic Sunflower Oil as other extraction processes (known as refining) use solvents to extract more oil from the seeds. The solvents are supposed to be removed, however there is some debate about this. Even oils labelled organic can be refined this way.
